The Waste Management Division of Municipal Affairs is responsible for the implementation of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy. This includes responsibility for the administration and oversight of over $200 Million in capital funding to construct required waste management infrastructure. The Division works very closely with the departments of Environment and Conservation, Government Services and the MMSB in the development of policy for the implementation of the Waste Management Strategy to ensure the success of defined objectives and that scheduled milestones are met.
The Director of Waste Management chairs the interdepartmental Provincial Technical Committee comprised of officials from the departments and agencies noted above. The Provincial Technical Committee reports to the Provincial Steering Committee comprised of executive members from these same organizations, chaired by the Assistant Deputy Minister of Municipal Engineering and Planning for Municipal Affairs.
One of the primary roles of the Division is to support regional waste management committees, regional service boards, municipalities and local service districts in the development and creation of sustainable waste management systems.
