Municipal Engineering and Planning Branch

The Municipal Engineering and Planning Branch assesses needs and funds municipal infrastructure projects, formulates land use policy and develops regional plans, and implements the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy.

Engineering Mandate

This division provides professional engineering, administrative, and technical support services to facilitate the provision of sustainable, suitable and affordable municipal infrastructure in a manner that will result in greater autonomy for communities.

Land Use Planning Mandate

The Division is responsible for administering the provisions of the Urban and Rural Planning Act. It is charged with assisting and advising departments of government and any public authority in planning for the orderly and economic development of land; collecting information, undertaking research, and publishing and distributing related material; assisting local authorities; and encouraging planning and efficient development within the province.

Waste Management Mandate

The Waste Management Division is responsible for the overall implementation of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy, and as the lead government agency for the Strategy it works closely with its other government partners: Department of Environment and Conservation, Department of Government Services, and the MMSB. It is responsible for working with local governments to find sustainable waste management solutions and the administration and engineering oversight of related capital projects to deliver modern waste management infrastructure.
